High-Level Launch of the Ocean Decade - First International Ocean Decade Conference (11:00 - 15:00 CET, Berlin)
The First International Ocean Decade Conference will kick-off on 1 June with a high level event to celebrate the Decade’s launch year. The event will mark the start of the re-structured Conference, which will be composed of the high level launch and a series of seven Decade Laboratories between July 2021 and May 2022. Engage with world leaders and other stakeholders from diverse stakeholder groups including science, industry, UN agencies, philanthropy, governments, NGOs, civil society and community leaders, media, and arts and humanities. The event will be hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany.

High-Level Debate on the Ocean and Suistanable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water (10:00 - 18:00 EST, New York)
The President of the General Assembly will convene a high-level thematic debate on the ocean and Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water at United Nations Headquarters in New York. With the support of the Governments of Portugal and Kenya – co-hosts of the 2nd United Nations Ocean Conference, as well as H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Oceans, this gathering will serve as a drumbeat to generate momentum towards the Conference in Lisbon, when public health safety measures allow.

The Virtual Early Career Ocean Professional (V.ECOP) Day will start on June 1, 2021, as a 24-hour livestream event following the sun around the world. It is hosted by and for early career ocean professionals from around the world and from a variety of ocean disciplines to showcase their work, activities, and contributions to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.V.ECOP Day is organized by the German Marine Research Consortium in cooperation with the ECOP Program and is supported by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the EU’s Framework Program for Research and Innovation as an officially endorsed UN Ocean Decade Activity.
