On 5 September 2022, the Challenger Society Special Interest Group on Wind Waves took place at the Imperial College Royal School of Mines.
It was a treat to meet in-person again, and find out all the latest developments in UK waves research. The waves SIG has over 80 members, and this year attracted attendance from international visitors in the wider waves community. This year attendees represented academic, consultancy, and research agencies. The meeting covered the mathematics of wave shape and wave groups, and interactions between wind and waves. We discussed renewable resource assessment to wave energy and risks to infrastructure and offshore operations. New results from experimental flume tanks were presented as well as novel tools using machine leaning and statistical techniques for wave forecasting. We also heard about the latest observations using satellites and even video cameras at the beach! We had talks of all levels – from PhD student to professor, plus were able to share content with remote participants unable to attend in person.
The next meeting of the waves SIG will be hosted at Oxford University in Spring 2024. Hope to see many members and new faces then!
