NERC have just released pre-announcements for the final round of BIO-Carbon funding, to open in spring 2026. Stage 2 is planned to build on the results emerging from the earlier stages of the programme, to apply this new knowledge to how we capture key processes in our models. In an exciting new partnership, NASA is planning to support collaborations with researchers in the US where the NASA EXPORTS programme has been tackling similar themes.
Stage 2a will involve the use of multiple global models to provide a robust assessment of how we can capture the role of key processes. Stage 2b will deliver a set of innovative approaches to modelling the influence of ocean biology on the ocean carbon system.
Anyone interested in applying for Stage 2 funding is encouraged to consider involvement in an international data workshop on The Roles of Biology in Helping the Ocean Store Carbon that is due to take place in Glasgow in 2-4 March 2026. Led by BIO-Carbon and with the generous support of MASTS this workshop will bring together national and international projects working in this area including APERO (France), BIOPOLE (UK), EXPORTS (USA), OceanICU (EU), PICCOLO (UK), REMO (SCOR working group), SOLACE (Australia) and TCA (Canada), to pool and compare data on key processes in order to identify how we can transfer this information into models. Anyone interested in leading one of the themes of the workshop should register their Expression of Interest by 30th June.
