Juerg Matter
Dr. Juerg M. Matter, Associate Professor in Geoengineering at the University of Southampton since spring 2013. Matter was previously an Associate Research Professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, New York, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York. Matter has been working on fundamental and applied problems related to geochemistry of gas-water-rock reactions and fossil energy for over 10 years, with particular emphasis on geologic carbon capture and storage. Matter has made fundamental advances into understanding permanent CO2 storage in unconventional geologic reservoirs. He demonstrated the feasibility of permanent CO2 storage in basaltic rocks. Matter conducts experimental work in the laboratory as well as in the field. He uses geochemical and geophysical methods to characterise CO2-water-rock interactions that occur in geologic reservoirs. He also develops new tracer techniques for monitoring and accounting of CO2 transport, reactivity, and storage. Matter has leadership responsibilities in the international CCS community and has great experience in the management of large, multi-institution projects (CarbFix Project, Iceland; Oman Drilling Project, Oman). Since 2006, he has been PI and Co-I on four major U.S. Department of Energy funded carbon capture and storage projects. He has (co-) supervised 6 PhD students to completion and currently leads a group of 3 PhD students.
