The project particularly partners with endorsed programmes of the UN Decade:

  • CoastPredict - Observing and Predicting the Global Coastal Ocean
  • OARS - Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability
  • GOOD - Global Ocean Oxygen Decade

Alongside these we partner with 15 other international research and stakeholder focused institutions and science coordination bodies.

The work is global in scope, but focuses on tropical coastal and shelf seas, particularly in South and South-East Asia and the Caribbean, drawing strongly on our knowledge and capability in NW European Shelf seas.

At the heart of this project is the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UND). We map to each of the seven outcomes in the UND implementation plan:

  1. A clean ocean (WP2);
  2. A healthy and resilient ocean (WP2, 3, 4);
  3. A productive ocean (WP4);
  4. A predicted ocean (WP1);
  5. A safe ocean (WP1);
  6. An accessible ocean (all WPs);
  7. An inspiring and engaging ocean (all WPs).

While we address many of the ten science challenges identified in that plan, four particularly resonate here: Challenge 1: Understand and map land and sea-based sources of pollutants; C2: Understand the effects of multiple stressors on ocean ecosystems; C4: Enhance understanding of the ocean-climate nexus and C6: Enhance multi-hazard early warning services.
