New Open Access Software Available: Marine Tools

Seabed habitat and geomorphology mapping are key approaches that we are using in AtlantiS to understand changes in the Atlantic ecosystem. Geographical information systems form the backbone of our data processing.

To overcome limitations in GIS software and accelerate the manipulation of marine data we have developed and made available two new marine software processing systems, MarineTools.

Marinetools includes basic functionalities such as slope, roughness, and interpolation, alongside more complex functions and interpretation, segmentation and classification techniques. These include Object-Based Image Analysis, Benthic Terrain Modelling, Satellite Derived Bathymetry, Random Forest predictions, and channel network analysis. Additionally, MarineTools enables the definition of MBES survey lines, coverage, and removal of erroneous values.

New techniques are being added intermittently.

The tools are available as toolbars for the ArcMap v10.x and the ArcPro v3.x software environments. The downloaded executables install the software wherever you wish. MarineTools for QGIS (v26 onwards) is also available, via the plugins menu, for instant download. It is currently an experimental plugin and can be found by searching for MarineTools in the “Not Installed” section of the plugins.
