Applications are open for the Green AI Sandpit, a highly interactive two-day event bringing together mathematical scientists, modellers and experts from industry, software engineering, artificial intelligence and sustainability.

The event will explore how the mathematical sciences can help reduce the energy and resource requirements of AI, supporting the development of more efficient and environmentally sustainable approaches from the foundations up.

Event details

Dates: Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th November 2026

Times:

· Day 1 09:30–17:00

· Day 2 09:30–15:00

Location: STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, UK (in person)

Through expert perspectives, networking and collaborative breakout sessions, participants will build a shared understanding of Green AI, identify urgent challenges and barriers, and develop promising ideas into practical next steps. The ambition is to establish a connected UK consortium and shape the framework for a position paper, alongside future research and funding opportunities.

If you would like to participate, please submit a light-touch expression of interest (approximately 100–150 words) outlining:

  • what you would like to contribute to the sandpit; and
  • what you would like to gain from the sandpit.

This will help organisers to shape the sessions across the two-days. Limited spots available, so an expression of interest does not guarantee participation.

Please send your expression of interest to Jessica Huntley at jessica.huntley@stfc.ac.uk by 17:00 on Monday 26 October 2026.
