OTE new sensor trials at the PAP-SO

June, 2017

The Ocean Technology & Engineering (OTE) group here at the NOC makes autonomous lab-on-a-chip sensors for measuring water chemistry.  They are working with the PAP team to continue ongoing tests of their technology and simultaneously providing excellent data. During the recent cruise DY077 to the PAP-SO, engineers and scientists on board the  RRS Discovery attached the newest OTE nitrate and phosphate sensors to the CTD frame, lowering them to nearly 4800 m. They also deployed a nitrate sensor to sample alongside the existing sensor suite at 30m. The new nitrate sensor will be making four measurements a day for the next year, measuring the change in nutrients as the local phytoplankton consume them and winter mixing brings nutrients up to the surface.
