November lab work

November, 2018

PAP-SO science continues year round. Here are some of the 2018 sediment trap samples being processed (left picture). The first step is to pick out the swimmers – the zooplankton which are not part of the genuine flux, but just pop in for a free lunch and end up staying longer. These animals are much less squashed than ones captured in a net (right picture). As well as being beautiful, these animals reflect the local zooplankton population, particularly those that feed on sinking particles.

Once the swimmers are removed, we split the sample into eight different subsamples so we can run lots of difference analysis.

The race is on to get this year’s samples turned into data, before getting ready for our 2019 cruise.
